FTS and Bolge attacking the WOD |
Alter Ego according to Wikipedia:
An alter-ego (Latin, "the other I") is a second self, a second personality or persona within a person, who is often oblivious to the persona's actions. It was coined in the early nineteenth century when dissociative identity disorder was first described by psychologists.[1] A person with an alter-ego is said to lead a double life.
Alter-ego is also used to refer to the different behaviors any person may display in various situations. Related concepts include avatar, doppelgänger, impersonator, and split personality.
Alter Ego according to Chris Mello:
Everyone has a 2nd personality/persona/2nd self deep within us. We use it when we are about to start a WOD, attempt a PR lift, push through the end and finish strong when we don't have any more gas left, accomplish something we never dreamed possible.
It takes each of us to a place where we don't think, we act! It takes us to a place we you don't just push hard you push HARDER! It takes us to a place where you feel like you can't continue to go, you not only go you go HARDER and STRONGER than you ever thought!
My Alter Ego:
Above is a clip from one of my favorite movies of all time, "the Boiler Room". I am a personal development and sales geek! I love people, I love learning, and I love challenges.
I watched this movie about 15 years ago (and still do to this day). It planted a seed in me about how I approach the things I do in sales, building a business, and how I attack a workout. The characteristics that I live by: It taught me to be tenacious, aggressive, hustle, not take NO for an answer, be confident (almost to the point of being cocky, but not quite:-),
Tell us about yours?
Do you have one? If not, you might want to develop one.
P.T.S!
Who is my alter-ego?? Pffftt… I’m hoping more people are wondering who the real me is. “FTS” is my Tyler Durden (movie “Fight Club”). There is no inspirational story, or deep meaning to it…it merely stands for “F*ck that sh*t”. Once the switch is flipped I don’t care and I don’t worry about what others think…the only thing that is going to happen is the task at hand and that is that.
ReplyDeleteNow I would pay pretty good money to have full control over this cat…but I suppose that is also the fun part of it. Sometimes I just morph and it’s on….sometimes I have to talk myself into it, maybe get lost in the music, the moment…whatever, but when I get there I am at my best in terms of performance and chasing down results. I use “FTS” to make me better because I believe it’s all the little effort and results that add up. It also keeps me motivated… I sometimes set a goal for a lift at a number and just focus on that. “FTS” says well if I can do X…then I can do (X + 5) and it constantly keeps me on my toes and moving forward with a purpose.
I use the real me to keep perspective and remember the big picture, but “FTS” is someone I can go to and enjoy smashing stuff in small chunks. To this day there is just something about setting a PR, or smashing a workout that leaves a high that I don’t get from anything else in my daily routines. Proving to myself that I can still get better, and proving with each task that I am afraid of one less thing drives me. The whole “David vs Goliath” thing is a hoot as well… “He’s too small to lift that…”
“FTS! Now what?”
A slightly goofy concept, but since conception “FTS”, he has provided plenty of conversation, laughs, failed lifts, PR’s, good days, bad days, and breaks from “reality”. I believe that over the course of the past year and a half along with the combination of CrossFit, the people I’ve met because of it, and not being afraid to find and be “FTS”, I am a better version of me.
Find your “FTS” and embrace it… just another tool to get better.
Solid post Recco, thanks buddy.

I love this post!! I need to find my crossfit alter ego!! Kind of like "vacation Rob!"
ReplyDeleteI hear "Vacation Rob" is coming for a visit?
ReplyDeleteI love that so many people have their box names! There are some people that I do not know your "real" name just what you are called at Crossfit!!! As for me.......
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I have one - I love finally knowing what FTS stands for! At one time, Chris referred to me as Champ for a few weeks - I'm not sure exactly why - but in my life I can find ways to use it - maybe I will be "champ" who knows...
